Datacenter Lightning Protection Design

Lightning strike incidents have long been a concern in the data center industry. To help reduce downtime and the loss of human life, coordinated earthing and lightning protection systems are a critical component for the protection of the building envelope its electronic contents along with human life.

To understand the magnitude of the problem, compare the electrical current in a single data processor to that of a lightning strike. As circuits within chips continue to get smaller, allowable power loads also decrease to a mere fraction of a milliamp. Yet a lightning strike upon a data center releases tens of thousands of amps and sends millions of volts surging through all available paths seeking grounding.  If even a fraction of that current enters a processor, it will corrupt a calculation, fry a circuit, or destroy an entire server.

A data center lightning protection design system should be thought of from the ground up. Design practice does not always receive its due attention and can be overshadowed by impressive critical power systems when designing data centers. However, early engagement with an earthing and lightning protection system specialist is crucial during the pre-construction phase of a data center development. Earthing and lightning protection systems must be designed under local and international system standards and installed by certified specialists.

At LEC we have the six point plan of protection. It is designed to provide total facility protection by integrating several concepts. This plan will minimize the risk of damage to facilities through:

  • Direct Strike Protection
  • Grounding and Bonding
  • Surge and Over-voltage Transient Protection

The six interdependent points that form a facility’s lightning protection design plan are:

  • Capture the lightning strike.
  • Convey the energy to ground.
  • Dissipate the energy into the grounding system.
  • Bond all ground points together to create a single point ground plane.
  • Protect incoming AC feeders.
  • Protect low-voltage data/telecommunication circuits.

You can trust in the equipment we deploy to protect the sensitive needs of data centers and servers. Lightning Eliminators are manufacturers and patent holder of the Dissipation Array System – An effective lightning protection system that works on Charge Transfer Technology.

  • Our DAS helps prevent downtime and loss of assets, while increasing safety.
  • The Charge transfer technology prevents a lightning strike from occurring within a protected zone.
  • With patented products and over 50 years of experience, we have been protecting a number of global 1000 companies from disaster and loss.
