The Perfect Lightning Rod Protection for Communication Towers

There’s little argument that lightning poses an enormous threat to telecommunication, radio and TV towers.

Lightning rod endeavors to attract lightning in order to divert lightning energy to earth.  Their main purpose is to attract lightning before it reaches any other object and allow the currents to flow down to the ground and dissipate the energy through the earth.

The traditional lightning rod also called the Franklin rod works on the same principles. They are metal rods installed over a structure as a preferred point of a lightning strike. The terminals are connected to a network of horizontal and vertical conductors that are terminated to earthing terminals. They are attached to the structure to be protected and rely on the conductivity of the metal portion of the structure to conduct lightning currents away, safely to the ground.

While the traditional lightning rod protection may avoid some of the worst effects of a direct strike, it has some serious drawbacks. It suffers from the secondary effects related to the close proximity of the electrostatic and electromagnetic fields, which in turn are very dangerous to flammables, explosives, and electronics.

However, the result of research at Lightning Eliminators & Consultant Inc has led to a significant breakthrough in the knowledge and understanding of the lightning phenomenon. Our research has helped to develop better protection and prevention devices.

DAS is a unique lightning rod protection solution, preventing lightning strikes on the tower with 100% success. Unlike traditional lightning rod, they don’t attract lightning but keeps lightning away from the strike. This prevents any failure in any types of equipment on site and avoids service drops in operations.

We have been protecting communication towers around the world for over 43 years and have witnessed first-hand the advancement and changes that have occurred due to innovation. Instead of using a simple lightning rod with a single sharp point, there are hundreds of sharp points rapidly emitting charges. They work on the charge dissipation principle which delays the formation of upward streamers by dissipating the concentration of charge on the structure. This makes the structure almost invisible to lightning.

LEC has created a hybrid lightning rod protection package that offers a robust and cost-effective solution for communication towers. It’s called the Tower Kit.
